It’s All a Part of Growing

On my drive to work today, I shared with my sister that I’ve been feeling like someone close to me hasn’t been fully supportive of my growth. Sometimes when I express excitement about my journey or talk about how I’m evolving, the energy isn’t matched. Instead, it can feel like my joy is minimized or my light is unintentionally dimmed. I never really saw this as jealousy, more so as people struggling to celebrate growth that doesn’t include them in the same way.

My sister, being the woman she is, shared a recent experience she had with a close friend. She offered a perspective I hadn’t fully considered. Sometimes when people see someone growing, changing, and building new connections, it can trigger a fear of being left behind. Even when love is present, growth can feel threatening to those who aren’t ready or able to move at the same pace. That fear doesn’t always come out as honesty; sometimes it shows up as distance, discomfort, or a lack of enthusiasm.

It reminded me that not everyone knows how to process change, especially when it challenges their sense of security or place in your life. And while that doesn’t make the experience easier, it does make it clearer. Growth isn’t always loud or celebrated. Sometimes it’s quiet, misunderstood, and uncomfortable for the people watching it happen.

Happy Wednesday.
